So check out these five inexpensive US vacation spots for families. And start planning a great vacation that keeps within budget.

Gatlinburg Tennessee

A vacation exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park makes for a great adventure holiday out in the wilderness. Gatlinburg is the best place to make your base because there are three park entrances here and there is plenty of accommodation. Entrance to the park is free and there are also attractions such as Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tram which takes you up to the peak where the kids can enjoy an alpine slide, chair swings, mini-golf and a maze for not much money.

San Diego in October

There‚Äôs lots to do in San Diego including the ever popular San Diego Zoo and Safari Park plus there are plenty of free open spaces such as Balboa Park and Coronado Beach. In October more than 100 participating attractions, hotels, and restaurants offer free admission and sizeable discounts for kids so is an ideal time to visit with a family.

Branson Missouri

Branson is home to Silver Dollar City, a theme park which is far less expensive than Disney. The rides and attractions have an historical theme that transports the visitor back to the 1800s but still provide plenty of modern day thrills. When you have done with the theme park, go to Table Rock Lake to enjoy 800 miles of fantastic shoreline and is free to access. There is also a Titanic Museum which is reasonably priced and will interest all ages.

Ocean City Maryland

Ocean City offers a great location for a traditional seaside vacation. The 10 miles of beach is unspoilt and when you require more action, the 3 mile long boardwalk offers a range of eateries, attractions and rides. To keep your costs down, avoid renting beach gear from outlets along the Boardwalk and either bring your own or do it old style and sit on your own picnic blanket.

Outer Banks North Carolina

This chain of islands off the coast of North Carolina is a magical place for an old style family beach holiday. You can escape the souvenir shops and attractions and instead opt for sea surf, sand dunes and sand castles. Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial which commemorates the first flight and if you fancy an attraction, the Pirate Adventures of the Outer Banks brings the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to life. Prices of accommodation are best in Spring and early Fall when the weather is good but costs are lower.

Of course, not everyone travels with a family. If you are planning a couples vacation in the US but still want to keep the costs down, check out our guide to the best vacation spots in the US for couples and find your perfect destination.
