June is Aquarium Month so now is a good time to get out there and visit some of the best aquariums in the world. After all getting up close and personal with fish and aquatic wild life can be an awe inspiring experience.
So which are the best aquariums to visit in the US?
Let’s take a look. All the following aquariums are highly rated by visitors and so you have a wide choice of venues.
Monterey Bay Aquarium
With the ethos of this aquarium focused on protecting ecology and wild life, you know that your ticket goes towards conservation and research initiatives. Leaving that aside the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a spectacular experience that highlights California’s coastline. Enjoy the mighty three story high kelp forest, enjoy watching the otters and experience the feel of a mighty storm at the wave crash tunnel.
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell Ohio
The aquarium has recreated an 88, 000 gallon coral reef which is teeming with exotic fish in a very natural looking habitat. In addition the aquarium is home to a Humboldt penguin colony which is extremely engaging. As well as the aquarium, the zoo is well worth a visit and is home to hundreds of animals from around the world.
Maui Ocean Centre Hawaii
This is an appealing aquarium that enables the visitor to enjoy local fish and other wildlife that abounds in this Pacific region from the safety and convenience of dry land. Kids will love the interactive displays and getting close to the fish and because the aquarium is so informative, it appeals to adults as well.
National Aquarium Baltimore Maryland
This is Maryland’s premier attraction and it is easy to see why. It features spectacular fish tanks and a dolphin sanctuary where you can enjoy seeing these magnificent creatures without adding to their exploitation.
This is the largest aquarium in the USA and is home to 500 species of marine wildlife including fish and mammals. The use of mammals such as dolphins and sea lions in live shows will delight some visitors although with the current view that these types of show are inhumane, not everyone will be as impressed by the spectacle. That said the Georgia Aquarium is impressive if simply because of its scale with over 10 million gallons of water used in the various attractions
Of course one of the major aquarium franchises across the USA is the Sealife Center located in many major areas across the country. While these can be a fantastic day out for all the family, there are real concerns about animal welfare and the practice of buying in and breeding captive dolphins, whales and sea lions for appearing in shows. This outdated and cruel practice should be consigned to history, so we cannot recommend our readers to support it.
If you are interested in nature and you care about animal welfare, check out the Discovery Channel . Here you can see all aquatic life, unfettered and living in the wide open spaces of the oceans rather than held captive in tanks. And although a fish aquarium is a fantastic way to experience the beauty of fish, we should all be concerned about the welfare of larger marine life held in tanks across the USA.
