- I've worked with various clients, employers, friends, and combinations of the three for the past 7 years using C#, Actionscript 2 and 3, MySQL, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Java, XHTML/CSS, PHP, Python, Erlang, and good old fashioned C and the somewhat more new fangled C++. I used to teach at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, which is a college in Boston affiliated with Tufts University, where I taught interaction design. I co-authored a book on Actionscript 3 was the lead author on the Flex Cookbook for O'Reilly and currently working on another book: Programming Interactivity for O'Reilly. I've spoken at several small conferences and a larger one: Adobe MAX. I keep busy, and I have some fun.
I don't have a classic computer science background. I studied linguistics, math, formal logic, cognitive science, and read a lot of poetry in college. I started programming by trying to build interactive installations using motion detection and image analysis. Along the way I've taught myself basic electronics, hardware, how to use OpenCV, Processing, some OpenGL, and some real-time rendering techniques. I like building websites and working with rapid development tools like Rails and Flex, playing with Apache and Lighttpd, drawing pictures, and thinking about how to make nice simple web sites and applications that do what they're supposed to and are nice to be around. I'm interested in a lot of different things: Ruby, Linux, image analysis, AI, Erlang, (oooh...it's gonna be popular!), and data visualization, among others and I try to keep myself engaged with what's going on in the world around me.
I watch a lot of soccer, I keep forgetting all the Chinese I know and keep trying to put more French and Spanish in my head, I'm trying to get back in the habit of reading philosophy again, and I love books, especially Pragmatic Programmers books, O'Reilly ones too. I run, I bike, I day dream some, I love bananas, and I'm back in the U.S. after living in France for a few months. I've lived in Taiwan, Russia, France, Argentina, Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Mexico, Vermont, Rhode Island, Seattle, Boston, New York City, and currently Portland (Oregon)
