Denkmal der Republik

Derek Holzer: What can you tell me about the location you chose for the performance in this video? Who is the statue of? Did you establish contact?

Martin Howse: It's an interesting "island" in the middle of the otherwise not so exciting "museumsquartier". I stumbled across it the year before passing through Vienna - very peaceful and somehow disconnected from the rest of the place. There are some other charged monuments in the area. The three statues form part of the "Denkmal der Republik" ("Memorial of the Republic") commemorating the founding of the socialist republic in 1918. Later defaced and destroyed by Austrian fascists. The three busts are: Jakob Reumann, Viktor Adler and Ferdinand Hanusch.

No contact was established. The central notion of the performance was to work across three bandwidths - light, radio waves, radiation (alpha, beta).
