For my submission to Vague Terrain's dub issue, four separate compositions were created with a specific emotion in mind. To me, the thing that sets dub music apart from other genres is the emotional feeling that is created, and so I have tried to create a sound-scape with a somewhat similar, laid-back feel. On the other hand, dub music was originally created through a specific process of re-sampling and re-mixing existing sound samples. As such, a merging of this 'dubbing' process with the goal of producing music that has a certain 'feeling' was my approach. Various sound sources were used in the making of '4', including several acoustic instruments (guitar, violin, piano, toy instruments) to field recordings that I have been collecting during travels in Europe and North America. Starting with these initial sound sources, the samples are processed and manipulated via software to create sonic textures, fleeting melodic phrases and rhythmic undercurrents. These compositions were then mixed together into one solid piece, with the intention that the music is listened to in its entirety to fully appreciate the soft, slow, introspective atmosphere that is created.
