[Constant Nieuwenhuis / Symbolische voorstelling van New Babylon / 1969] Abstract VJing serves as a strong influence in the development of tentative architecture, an architecture that by means of intangible or immaterial technologies can happen at any point in space. To outline the role of VJing in architecture, I will briefly begin with the Situationist Internationalist movement and the New Babylon project of Constant Nieuwenhuis. I will connect it to the Video RIOT! project to emphasize the role of technology in (re)defining our relationship to space, architecture and nature. I will continue with an example of an everyday experience of space and the freedom it gives from traditional notions of space and architecture. These threads will culminate in the question of "what do we perceive as freedom anyway?" |
