I don't like to think a lot about what it is I'm going to do when I'm creating the raw material for my compositions. I like to let things flow and see if anything worthwhile makes its way onto tape—a pretty picking pattern, a funky rhythm, a weird sound my synthesizer is making for no reason. I record first, ask questions later. I then listen to what I just did and keep the bits I want to use.

The thing about this approach is that it's broadened my horizons in terms of what sounds I will use in a composition. I've found that some of the sounds I prize most occurred totally randomly, and could never be recreated, because they were of a very specific moment and place—dropping something on the ground, dragging my mike stand across the floor, knocking my guitar. So for me, sampling has become not only a way to capture and use happy musical accidents, but also a way to capture and use the sounds that randomly populate my life. You'll hear the sound of me struggling with a patch cord, what my buzzing fridge sounds like, the sound of me putting down my guitar and walking around my apartment. In a way, it's an intimate audio portrait, integrating my own personal musique concrète into something new.
