[Christian Marc Schmidt / Driving (still) / 2006] Sampling is a process of curation, consisting of collecting, organizing, and reformatting. As such, it is a relevant factor in my work, which often revolves around systems and meta-narratives based on multiplicities of individual elements and their attributes. For me, sampling is fundamentally a method for communicating a shared experience. It is about understanding similarity and difference in individual perception, and our roles as individuals in relation to a community. My work assumes that there are universal traits that we all share, linking us as human beingsādespite our differences. Through sampling, I am interested in discovering a kind of universal truth, a meta-narrative. To me, sampling is a process enabling commentary and interpretation. Its premise is to establish a system of relationships between formerly disparate elements. Ultimately, the outcome of sampling is simulation: It seeks to validate a theoretical model on the basis of evidence, simulating (theoretical) connections through an assemblage of "observations". As an artist, I am asserting an internal point of view, supported by external evidence. Doing this allows me to overcome the limitations of singular expression and attempt to speak to the human condition. The two pieces featured here draw from a variety of content sources, in both cases expressed according to a specific theme or motive. I was interested in a comparability of the individual content segments, according to a common set of parameters, for example type, location, composition and length. These parameters form the core of both works. |
